I bought one of this Cendyne burner form Office Max at $29.00.
I returned the first one, and then figured out the drive simply will not erase or write any of my old "650MB" or "1 X CDR/W", from any makers ( 6, 7 different brands tested ).
It works with 4 x Memorex CDR/W, and any CDR.
If this is important to you, don't get this drive.

But who really cares about being be able to rewrite to old CDRW?
CDR are pretty much free (mail-in rebate)
When data need to be re-written it is called "toss and get a new disc". -
Many CD burners now have a minimal write speed for CD-RW or CD-R disks. Sometimes it is very hard get ahold of this information. I have two burners that seem to have a 4x write minimum and another that seems to have an 8x write minimum. I discovered this through trial and error with VCDEasy.
I personally do use CD-RW on a regular basis. I am in the process of converting many VHS tapes to CVD. At times due to the original quality I find I want to adjust the settings and try to in some way clean up the image. I use CD-RW disks to copy multiple short captures with different settings/filters and see how they actually look on my standalone DVD player. Many times I have had to go back to the computer and "try again" to get settings/filters "right." To me this is an ideal situation for CD-RW disks. Furthermore, I have read many posts this website that "some" standalone DVD players work better with CD-RW disks than CD-R disks.
Like CD-R, CD-RW disks are not that expensive any more. If you want to use CD-RW disks I suggest you buy some newer ones that are rated for faster speeds.
Note: I have had problems with the Jensen CD-RW disks. After a few rewrites the reflective surface began to peel. Try to stay away from these. -
Most of my CDR/W are data/program CDs with multi-sessions. I updated them when new rev or sp or patch come out. I am already awashed with disc in my den.
I know what you means, about CDR been so cheap.
That's why I said if old 1xCDR/W matter to you then don't get this one. At least, I may save someone an unnecessary trip to OfficeMax.
