  1. I was under the impression that the BUP files is a BackUP of the IFO file.

If this is so, is it required on the DVD for it to play?

  3. Thanks for that, even though it doesn't make any sense.

I DO believe you, but, why have a backup file on Read only media?

  4. The DVD specifications state words to the effect of the BUP file is provided so that if the IFO file becomes unreadable the contents of the disc are not irretrievable.

Although the DVD format has pretty rugged error correction (I think it's been written as being about 10 times stronger than that employed on a CD), the IFO file takes up a ridiculously small portion of the media and it is entirely feasible that even a slight mark or damage to the disc could obliterate this information.

In the event of the IFO file being unreadable, the player will look to the BUP file for pointers as what to do with the disc and how to play it.

Even if your player(s) have a flexible attitude to the standard and don't look for this information, you might as well include this tiny little file and double the chances of the DVD still being playable in the future.
