GO SONY BABY!!!! -
Just be aware. My media (bought as 1x) showed in Nero that it is 2x, but real burning speed was jumping and final time corresponded to 1x burn speed.
-
Good point donpedro.
The way for everyone to tell what the actual burn speed is, is to check the actual time elapsed during a burn.
For example,
4 gigs at 1X ~ 60 minutes
4 gigs at 2X ~ 30 minutes
4 gigs at 4X ~ 15 minutes -

it appears as if the 1.0f firmware upgrade does upgrade the dvd-r read speed from 2x to 4x...however this does not include dvd-r MOVIES...i tested with nero cd speed application, it showed 4x read speed with a ps2 dvd-r backup, and 2x speed reading a dvd-r movie....this is not great news seeing as i use the read function on the drive for dvd-r movies more than anything else...i doubt a later firmware upgrade will fix this, as it seems intentional....any ideas?

I'm a happy camper!!!
Hey, how you copy people's quote? Make it white? -
Hey anybody tried burning to a TDK-RW I tried it this morning and it was burning at 1x with Nero with the 1.0f upgrade.
I kinda feel it was burning at 2x before.
Any comments would be appreciated -
As a reseller's point of view.... I have seen people burning 1x Optodisc at 2x. However, I haven't personally test them yet. So I cannot say if they actually works. Just feel interesting, can anyone provide some kind of report such as ADVDInfo to share others this information. Thankx

Anybody has any news if the Ritek 4x DVD-R media on the market works at 4x with DRU-500A?
-
DRU-500A with fw 1.0f burns KHypermedia 1X DVD-Rs at 2X, using Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5.
I had four of these 1X-rated discs left from before 4X DVD-R media came out. (I bought them on sale for 50% off, just to try them out).
Anyway, I tried burning one at 2X today and it worked (took only 18 minutes, including finalizing, to burn 2.5 gigs).
The disc plays fine -
Did you check whole disk (full time) ? I was able to burn one 1x rated media at 2x speed but I could play only firts 10 minutes without any freezing and skiping in player.
