  1. Yes, thats right I just want a regular old dvd-rom drive. I don't have the cash for a dvd-writer right now or the media for one for that matter!. I would just like some recommendations on one to get for ripping dvd's to my harddrive so I would be able to make (s)vcd's out of them. Nothing too fancy yet, I just like to have the option to do something as I often times do things on a whim. I have a first generation dvd-rom in one of my other old pc's (HP Pavilion 8275 -- The first pc to debut with the slot-1 PII 300MHz and a DVD-ROM (WOW back then lol ), it was the latest and greatest 5 years ago lol) but I don't think it will even read a dvd anymore.

Anyhow I think I would benefit from a drive that is a higher speed than the 1x or 2x that the one I have is anyway. I have seen some rather inexpensive 16x drives but I was unsure of the brand... compusa specials for like 30 dollars after rebates and such...

Anyone able to give me some idea of a decent drive say under 100 dollars or possibly even less?

If you need anymore info from me about my system or anything you feel would help you justify an answer just let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. The EPO at CompUSA Rips ONLY at 2x.

A LiteOn16X can rip up to 10x even on a dual layer dvd disc.

Lite-On LTD-163 $47 black (in stock), $42.00 beige (currently out of stock) at Newegg. I have two of these they run great. They run at 16x. Lite-On, itself has a very good reputation.
