  1. What is the differens between MPEG1 & MPEG2?

Is MPEG2 always better or is it only in higher resolutions it should be used ??

Is it better to make an XVCD with higer bitrate then to use MPEG2 in VCD resolution??

    Thanks..

  2. In a nutshell, Mpeg-1 is for non-interlaced video at low bit rates (less than 2000kb/sec). Mpeg-2 is for interlaced video at higher bit rates. Making a VCD with Mpeg-2 at 1150Kb/sec will look worse than using Mpeg-1. The compression algorithm for mpeg-1 is working best under 2000kb/sec, and mpeg-2 works best over 2000kb/sec. The 2mb/sec point is not a make or break point, but a rough value for the cross-over for mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 use.

  3. So if the averge bitrate is 1600kb/s you think its better to make a XVCD insteed...

    How about the resolution???

Is MPEG2 not good in low Resolution compared to MPEG1 if i use higher bitrates ??

  4. At 1600kb/sec I would always use mpeg-1, no matter the resolution. How high resolution you can use all depends on how critical you are to compression artifacts. At a fixed bit rate, the higher the resolution, the higher the compression artifacts. You will have to try and see if the extra video detail is worth the extra compression artifacts. You can only do this by making tests and try it out. Everybody looks at mpeg compression artifacts differently. Like myself, I hate artifacts in still video, but don't mind blockiness during high action. Some people don't care about artifacts during still (low motion video), but can't stand blockiness during high action video. It's all up to your eyes.
