dvd-r/rw's are quite expensive in ireland, so imagine my surprise when i went into my local pc world and found they were selling pioneer dvd-rw's for just 2.98 each (euro)! i bought 10 of them. however, i have found the discs have CPRM- Copy Protection for Recordable Media. has anyone come across discs with this? i hope it only means i cant make copies of these discs on the fly with nero. the disc labels say
"cprm is the copy protection system with scrambling system regarding the recording of "copy once" broadcating program."
anyone know exactly how CPRM works?

  2. I do not know what it does but I do know that I had some princo dvd-rws that had it and they work fine for copying dvds. I think they will work fine using the common dvd back up methods with these discs.

  3. It most likely only affects stand-alone recorders.

yeah epo i was thinking the same. if you put one of these discs in a set-top recorder and try to record an encrypted channel the cprm kicks in.

CPRM is likely to be just as effective as CSS has been.

    Some "features" of CPRM:

    1) Identification of the media type in the lead-in area, so if info that has been intended only for ROM media has been detected on a R/W disk, a CPRM complient player will refuse playback.

    2) The area where the CSS decryption key normally goes is pre-embossed to prevent bit for bit copies (this is also on a -R disk).

    3) Unique serialization for each disk.

    4) Allowance for one copy (using a CPRM complient recorder).

In short, CPRM will just be another hurdle that will need to be cracked to give the end-user full access to his fair-use rights. (As far as I can tell, CPRM only applies to -R/W media.)
