  1. Hi All -

I'm new to these forums & to digi video in general.

Our record label is putting on some live nights. The venue has a digi projector (yay!) & we want to shoot/edit video footage to project at our shows. What we don't have is a DVD-writer, so VCD/SVCD seems very cool.

I have a question about DVD player compatibility (the database on this site is xcellent). Question is - if a DVD player can play CD-RWs and also play SVCDs, does this mean it can play SVCDs recorded onto CD-RW media?

Or would we generally have to use CD-Rs for this?

    Thanks -

CD-R/RW readability is mostly an issue with the laser optics themselves; i.e. can they deal with the lower reflectivity of writable media. VCD/SVCD compatibility, on the other hand, is more an issue of the player's firmware; does the unit recognize the data structure of a VCD or SVCD for what it is when it sees it?

So, generally speaking, if a player can recognize the VCD/SVCD structure as a valid video disc, it will recognize it on any media which the unit is capable of reading. And if the unit is capable of reading CD-R/RW media, then it should be able to read any data format which the unit is capable of recognizing and playing.

In short -- yes, it should work. Of course, given the quirkiness of some players, you might want to burn a couple of test discs to be sure...
