Maybe during the summer of next year. LiteOn will not produce that many DVD writers until the end of 2003. BTW, if the Sony was the worst thing for you, why do you think LiteOn will be better than Sony? How can be a poorly-made copy better than the original?

Well lets put it like this.
Ive had 4 different lite-on products, and all have worked a charm. I also found support to be superb.
Sonys product for me was shit, and the support was non existent.
What makes a lite-on drive a "poorly made copy" i wonder? -

No disc could be played on anything other than the sony.
Countless dvd players tried, and 3 xbox`s. Media not the problem.
Drive was tried in 2 other systems.
Laser power errors.
Faulty drive! -

So your going to scrub it because you got a defective drive?
When you buy allot of computer equipment it's inevitable that you will get something that is not working.
When I got a bad Maxtor drive once I didnt write Maxtor off
Thanks for the info though and good luck. -
Ive sent it back and am awaiting a refund.
The reason i wanted a lite-on is that im more than happy with their other products. -
Here, here I agree with scraftag. I also returned my Sony drive 2 days ago. I don't have a problem reading media, but when I put a Kypermedia DVD-R to record it took over an hour and 30 minutes to finish. This is WAY beyond the time of even 1x. I believe someone on this forum also had the problem of taking over an hour to burn a DVD-R disc. Like scaftag I'm also waiting for a Lite-On DVD burner or maybe hoping that Plextor might make one (doubtful though).

Well my first cd-rw of liteons was the 16X and i never had a bad burn with it. Truly amazing product for the price.
I think liteon learnt from their mistakes, and will carry lessos learnt forward into the dvd market. There is a big niche waiting for them to open if they get it right first time, and they know it! -
I realize this isn't quite on topic but aren't Sony CD-R drives rebadged Lite-On's? Does Sony manufacture the DRU500A or does someone else? Also, I got a bum Lite-on 32X burner I exchanged it and have since replaced it with a 48X burner which I thought sucked with the VS06 firmware, again, I upgraded the firmware and am now very happy with the drive.

Yes, current Sony CDRWs are Lite-ons. I like Lite-on as well (have had a 24x, 40x, got a 32x for my brother, and have a 48x and 16x DVD-rom in my PC now). But this Sony rocks for me. The couple problems I've had were media or Nero based, and with the newest firmware are gone. Woohoo!

I just bought a 52x24x52 lite-on CD burner. I use 48 speed intenso CDR-s, and I can burn my VCD's using this drive at 52 speed, with no problems. Very good piece of hardware, will also overburn to 98:58.
