  1. Hi, I just got a new Dell system with the OEM drive and it can only do dvd+r/+rw, will the drive ever be able to do dvd-r/-rw with a firmware?

  2. I doubt NEC will release a firmware that makes it possible to write DVD-R/RW with the DVD+R/RW version.
But if the single format DVD+R/RW version of ND-1100 (ND-1090 in Germany) is identical with the dual format DVD±R/RW version of ND-1100 (except for the firmware) it might be possible to hack it with the dual format firmware when that's available.

    ND-1100A
    ND-1090A
    ND-1000A

Aren't the Dell OEM DVD+R/+RW drives made by Ricoh, not NEC?

  5. I'm not sure if it's only in Germany it's called ND-1090A. NEC Germany has some info about the problem here (Babelfish translation) or in German here.
According to Chip.de the European DVD+R/RW version is called ND-1090A but in Japan it's called ND-1100A, bad babelfish translation again:
The problem with the drive assembly: With all-largest probability it will concern the ND1090A. This small surprise we have to owe to badly transparent product politics of NEC in Japan: In Japan both the 4x DVD+R-burner, and the +R/-R burner are called ND1100A. In Europe there is - not completely insignificant - the distinction between ND1090A and ND1100A.
And IO Data in Japan which sells an internal and external DVD writer based on the NEC DVD+R/RW version informs that they are based on the ND-1100A (Babelfish translation):
Actualizes the DVD * CD compilation of high quality the NEC make DVD drive " ND-1100A/GEP " adoption which
Edit: Nero lists two versions of the ND-1100A here too, "DVD+RW ND-1100A" and "DVD_RW ND-1100A". The former is probably the DVD+R/RW version and the latter the DVD±R/RW version even if the info in the "speed" column are wrong.

Kennyshin: The new 4x DVD+R/RW writers Dell ships with their computers are made by NEC.

  8. Lets hope they have a hacked firmware when its released. For some reason, I think the firmware is the limited agent, I don't see anywhere where it says 1090A but I do see 1100A.
