Analog Recording: Panasonic E-30 or Philips 985?

Seems like most here favor the E-30. I'm a newbie who's tried the capture/edit/burn on my Vaio RX-550 but am just tired of the time and effort (not to mention, it's an easier sell on my wife to get a DVD recorder at the trade-off of not spending so much time on the computer!) Anyhow, what are the advantages of the DVD-RAM, DVD-R on the E-30 compared to the DVD+R, DVD+RW on the Philips? Also, the E-30 literature talks about linear editing features--does this mean I can edit some of my captures/recordings?

Note that DVD-RAM cannot be played on most standalone DVD players. In contrast, DVD-R and DVD+R can be played on most standalone DVD players while DVD+RW can be played on some standalone DVD players.

Thanks. G.T. Am I correct in that the Panasonic only gives me the option of one-time recording--and that if I mess up the DVD-RAM or DVD-R there are no re-write options (or can you re-write over a EVE-RAM)?
