I don't really think there is the need for that as the versatility of the audio/video feed is already mentioned in it's own name D-V-D i.e. Digital Versatile Disc.

Some DVD's you purchase are in mpeg1 format others in mpeg2. The possibility of using 9.8MB/sec bitrates is not used that often apparently. I checked a few of my DVD's with the bitrate viewer and often came across standard bitrates of 7MB/sec or well below. If this is so that companies can utilise more space or if this has other reasons I honestly don't know.

If you think that we already have 6 DVD standards, God know's what will happen next...DDMLDVD-RW ??????

  3. 1. I presume that people will make formats (in spec or not) that will play on their DVD player. But, as aldus stated, DVD is pretty flexible to begin with. Also, you are not really going to get higher quality than standard "DVD quality" on your regular TV.

As for the bitrate (@ aldus), the reason this is so is exactly the same reason why very few SVCDs will have an average bitrate of 2500 kbit/s. It isn't necessary. A VBR at a lower average bitrate can probably still achieve the same quality as a CBR at the maximum level.

    2. Making a miniDVD isn't really the issue. They are not difficult to make. The issue is finding a stand-alone player that will play it.
