  1. Hi,

I have a big problem with understanding aspect ratio.
I try to author an avi file which is exactly 608*256 pixel.
I like to get a dvd with the same aspect ration.

I tried everything but it always looks ugly on tv.

For my understanding DVD (PAL) is 720*576 so I though i use the follwong settings in TMPGenc:

crop video, ceter (custom size) 720*303 (which is 2,375, the aspect of the avi). This produces an mpeg with borders and it fits in horizontal size to the screen.

When i watch it on a 16:9 TV it looks squezed (??) I have to edit the Ratio of the tv which results in not beeing a sharp picture anymore.

    What so I do wrong?
what shall I take for 'source ratio' (as there is only 4:3 16:9 and 2,1:1
    (which is closest)?
What shall i take for Ourput Aspect ratio?

I tried s lot og combinations, none fits perfect.

    Can someone please help me?

    Thanks
    Mike

  2. Set the source aspect ratio as 1:1 (VGA), under settings, advanced, set the video arrange method to full screen(maintain aspect ratio). You dont need to crop it or select a custom size.

This will maintain the aspect ratio of the original AVI

  3. Thanks,

I tried this 5 minutes ago with same effect. But there is one really strange thing, if I watch the generated vob with PowerDVD the company logo is centeres in the middle of the screen with much space on the left and right side, if I burn it to dvd and watch it on my tele the logo fits to the screen (with no space anywhere).
I controlled my tv's and dvds settings which both says 16:9 but where is the rest of the picture?

    I'm totally confused now

I only like to have the full movie on my screen, no cropping or anykind of manipulation, so what can I do?
Or does my DVD (pioneer dv-444) crop the movie?

I'm out of hints, please help..

    Thanks
    Mike

  4. Ok,

i found a perfect setting for me,
I use a custom resize to 720*431 which equals 1024/2,375 which is the format taken from the avi.

I tested this and the picture is perfect - no more cropping as meantioned in my last post (supose this is done by my tv) and my tc is telling me 'widescrren' which it doesn't do before.

    So thanks for the help.

  5. I think you may be experiencing overscan (search the forum) which all tv's do to a certain extent.
