    Some new models of dvd-rom's are locked to 2x ripping speed!
    Many DVD-+R(W)'s are locked to 2X ripping speed!

    Check to make sure you're DVD is in DMA mode and not PIO - Control Panel then System then Hardware then Controller settings (check other posts for better instructions if you can't find this setting).

    If your DVD is in PIO even when you have Use DMA if available it may be a DVD firmware problem - check you manufacturers site to get an updated firmware (or you may have to do a little hunting through the web) - follow the instructions for upgrading firmware carefully!

    I use a Pioneer 115 for ripping and I was having the same problem as you - ripping was only 1.2X at best. PIO was all I could get... Upgraded the firmware, DMA "turned on" and I'm now ripping up to 10X.

  6. What exactly is DMA. I am not having any problems, but I checked my settings and my DVD-rom has DMA checked, but my CD-RW does not. Should I just check it on? Is DMA good to have?

    DMA = Direct Memory Access. Basically a means in which data can be read bypassing much of your systems overhead.

    PIO = Processor Input/Output. Slower but I would imagine less problematic.

    When available you should always use DMA - if you find errors/crashes cropping up then you may have to revert back to PIO.

    Well, why just limit it to 2x rather than stop it?

    that would be DVD-ROM -> CD-ROM

    http://cd-rw.org/news/archive/3537.cfm :

    "-- virtually all new DVD drives, manufactured in 2002, are capped so that the DVD ripping can be done only at max 2x speed. Thanks to MPAA."

    maybe MPAA knows why new DVD-ROM's/DVD-RW's are locked... 8)
