Hi I am trying to view an .avi file with windows media player and I have the latest divx codec installed from divx.com How come I can hear the video but not see anything? Please link me to where I can download the right codec for my player thanks

You probably need to install the older DivX codecs as well as the newest one (I find that versions 4 and 5 will work on most avi files).
Or possibly try one of the codec packs like Nemo - look at the tools section of this site on the left hand side. It may be something like the 'SMR patch' or one of the other codecs included in the packs.
