  1. Can any one tell me if I need a NTSC capable TV if I region hack a standard dvd player in the UK?

    I'm from the UK and I'm planning on buying a standard dvd player to region hack it so I can play different region dvd's. I've seen various Multi-region DVD Players on sites such as amazon and they all say that to play region 1 dvd's I'll need a "NTSC" capable Television. Can you tell me if It's still true if I buy a standard dvd player and region hack it my self (Weather I'll still need a NTSC capable television to play dvd's). I think some one from the UK can help me here?

    If I do need a NTSC capable television, how do I know it's NTSC capable?

    Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    JJ. :)

  2. I live in India (has PAL system) but I travel all over as a part of my job. Naturally, I wanted a DVD player that could play any zone DVD, PAL or NTSC on my PAL TV. After searching for over six months I purchased Pioneer DVD player DV-K301. It has tree CD/DVD changer tray, plays all regions' DVDs, NTSC or PAL.

    On the back panel of this player there is a small switch which toggles between AUTO/PAL/NTSC. This is how it works:

    DVD Type --> Switch Setting -> Signal Output
    NTSC --> AUTO --> NTSC
    PAL --> AUTO --> PAL

    NTSC --> PAL --> PAL
    PAL --> PAL --> PAL

    NTSC --> NTSC --> NTSC
    PAL --> NTSC --> NTSC

    If you are interested in buying a player that plays all kinds of DVDs, look for a feature as above, plus some of the following:

    a) Region 1 to 6 switchable (manually by remote)
    b) Macrovision disabled
    c) 110V-240V (50/60 Hz) auto-switching
    d) RCE enabled

    My original TV was a 21" PAL TV. Afterwards, I also purchased a multi-system 29" flat-screen TV. Since then, I have moved the DVD switch position to AUTO.

  3. Most hardware (DVD/TV/VCR) in the uk are capable of playing/displaying both PAL and NTSC, particularly newer equipment.

    You can either have a DVD player that outputs the NTSC signal as PAL60, a PAL only TV will display this correctly.

    Or a DVD player that outputs NTSC as NTSC, you then need a TV capable of displaying an NTSC signal.

    Most new DVD players will output NTSC as PAL60, and most new TV's will display an NTSC signal. (In the UK)

    Check the manual for your TV to see if it can handle NTSC, if it can then buying a DVD player that will only output NTSC as NTSC is not a problem as you TV will display it ok. If your TV is PAL only you will need a DVD player that can output NTSC as PAL 60 for your TV to diaplay the signal correctly.

    If your TV is fairly new it will almost certainly support both PAL and NTSC.

    Likewise with your DVD player, if new it should be able to output NTSC as PAL60.

  4. Thank you both for your advice, I think I'll buy a dvd player from a shop that wont mind me taking it back if it's not what I want and I'll see if it works for region 1.

    Thanks,

    JJ
