which card should i get?

hi- i have 450mhz p2, 16mb nvidia, 128mb, 80gb 7200 desktop and a 1ghz athlon 4, 256mb, 8mb sony video,20gb 5400 laptop... i want to capture audio and video off of an 8mm analog camera.. im not sure which card to get.. does 8mm only have a certain resolution, where getting a higher resolution card would serve no purpose? i can use pci firewire or usb.. i'd prefer to use a non pci capture card if possible..

what card would be best to get? thanks-

Any particular reason you don't want to use a PCI capture card? If you don't mind using one, I've just got my grubby mitts on a Pinnacle DC10plus. It's had some flack for it's lack of compatibility with Premiere and so on, but personally for my uses - not broadcast - it's ideal. I just want to put together simple videos and distribute them on either on VHS or VCD. It does the trick nicely. And it's cheap, and actually very impressed with the capture quality! I just need to optimize my system a little and I'll go from 8 lost frames over 10 minutes to 0.

I recently bought a refurbished ADS Instant DVD USB from Tiger Direct. I am using it to capture 8mm analog video and writing to SVCD format CDs with great success. If you look around and search on this device, you will find a lot of negative comments prior to Oct 2002. Apparently it was quite buggy and difficult to use prior to late Sept 2002. I have had no problems and it works very well for me.

It is a hardware MPEG 1/2 encoder which attaches to your computer via USB and soundcard. I capture in DVD resolution at 5 mb/s and then render to SVCD resolution using TMPEGenc. This gives the best looking SVCD. The capture software can capture directly to SVCD but I think the quality is not as high as doing the second rendering.

hey- thanks for the replys. the reason i want to use non pci is so i can use it on my laptop as well as desktop. the ads usb instant dvd looks pretty good, but a little pricey. i was thinking maybe the ads usb instant vcd??

that dc-10 looks pretty good too.. will the resolution difference between that and the ads usb instant vcd be obvious?
