I have had the ATI AIW 128 Pro for about a year. The card is great BUT since day one, the TV tuner has always been snowy. I am running a straight coax and if I put the coax on a tv, it looks wonderful.

Does anyone else have this problem ? How is your TV picture ? Even my BEST channel (some better than others) is poor compared to a TV. But most are very grainy/snowy/lines....Yet, the card for analog capture is awesome...Hmmm. Might it help to COAX into a VCR (tuner) and RCA into the breakout box ? Might that tuner be much clearer ???

    Thnaks !

  2. I have had an AIW 128 pro and an AIW radeon 7500, the picture on the TV tuner looks just the same as that on an external TV.

  3. Hi arcorob,
Maybe this could help, in most tv's there is a few stages of amplification after the tuner call "i.f. amplifiers. If the signal is too low the tuner lets all the signal in and more amplification..... These capture boards do not have these amplifier stages. So maybe your signal is too low. Maybe one of those t.v. amplifiers would help.

I think your on to it...I put the signal into the VCR first and then to the ATI card via the break-out box (rca ) so I have

    COAX TO VCR
    VCR RCA to ATI BREAKOUT

Excellent...snow is almost gone..I DO have a hum but that is from my VCR I notice. Have to try with a better one...WOW. A year like this...

  5. When at all possible, NEVER, never, never use the COAX unless thats all you have to work with.
Priority of video quality using the AIW should be....

    1. Firewire (on the 8500DV)
    2. S-Video w/RCA audio
    3. RCA video and audio
    4. F-connector (coax).

On a 1 - 10 scale of video quality (10 being the best)
The coax will give you a 2.
RCA will give you a 5.
    S-video a 7.
    Firewire a 8.
(composite with optical audio is the best at 10 but not applicable on the AIW).

  6. If you want to use the built in TV tuner on th AIW cards then you have to use coax. Same as you would to get a broadcast signal into any TV or VCR

Either I don't understand your answer or you don't understand the question.

I am not talking about COAX for video, I am talking about how you feed thetv tuner. That is its purpose.

If I have to circumvent this and use a VCR to bring in a TV signal, what is the point of having a TV tuner card. I would only need composite input.

Is that what you are suggesting ?

  8. Hi arcorob,
Glad to see the picture improved with your vcr in line. Maybe the hum problem is coming from the vcr when it gets decoded or remodulated. So maybe if you get an external amplifier the problem will be solved.
