I am capturing from VHS tape onto PAL VCD. I can capture at a higher res than needed for VCD but will there be any advantage in quality in doing this?
Thanks

VCD for pal is 352x288
However, if you capture at 352x576 you will capture both fields per frame which should result in a better quality picture when you encode to mpeg. This is assuming you are capturing to AVI first and then encoding to mpeg.
Read the high vs low res section on this site.

I can't speak for your system but from experience I can say that @ a res of 352x480 (for NTSC) from vhs, I dropped frames like crazy, but when I went up to a res of 480x480: boom no dropped frames at all!!
so just experiment!!"The software said Win XP or better, so I Installed Linux"
