  1. I just bought a Pioneer A05 and am trying to do a 4x burn but I don't have the 4X option available to me from within Nero 5.5.9.17. This is with or without the media in the drive.

    1. Do I need to update my firmware to do a 4x burn?
    2. Do I need to update Nero to do a 4x burn?

    Thanks

  2. Nero checks to see what kind of media you have in the drive....

If you don't have any dvd-r in the pioneer it will show 1X or nothing

  3. I think If you use the "wizard" when you get to the BURN screen there is a pulldown menu on this screen and I think that is where you can force it to use 4X. I was not able to find the setting without using the wizard but its probably there somewhere.

Can't remember if you need media in there but I am pretty sure that you must.

As the previous post stated it does check but it will use the fastest speed ithat is supported. When I do this it selects 4X for CD-RW and this is fine. When I have a CD-R in there it selects 40X. Well if I burn that fast my VCD's do not run. I found I have to force Nero to burn at 16X and I know I used the wizard setting to do this. The 16X burn works perfectly.

  4. Just to confirm the previous postings.unless you have 4X media it will NOT have the option displayed.Similar if you have X1 media this will be the ONLY option.A quick test is to swap from X1 to X2 and you will see the extra options of X1 and X2 with X2 media ...Dont ask me how,it knows, but I learnt the hard way, until I inserted X2 disk then hey presto X2 writing option.

NERO knows what the maximum burning speed of your disk is, because it is written on the disk. When NERO interrogates the disk, it gets everything that it needs to give you all your options. A 1X DVD-RW will only burn at 1X. I've never heard of being able to "over-ride" the NERO settings to allow you to create a coaster by burning a 1X disk at 2X, or a 2X disk at 4X.

To see exactly what your disk is capable, save the log file at the end of a burn (and maybe even an unsuccessful burn) and examine the data under MAX WRITE RATE. The 1X rate for a DVD is about 1.385Mbytes/second, or 11.08Mbps.

All NERO is trying to do is to protect you from yourself (unless, that is, you really do enjoy making coasters for drinks this way).
