Very little on my system likes DV. I downloaded a sample .DV clip direct from a miniDV cam to see what if anything I could do with it. TMPGEnc didn't accept it. Neither did Virtual Dub. However, Premiere 5.1 did play it, at least a little. It flashed magenta between each frame and went megenta all over if it rested a bit. Then it came back if selected again.
I was able to export the DV file as uncompressed. Note: size increased 10x.
After that, TMPGEnc was able to convert it to a DVD MPEG-2 file type. Note: size decreased from the DV clip to 1/5. or 25MB went up to 250 then down to 5MB.
Why won't TMPGEnc just encode .DV clips?

Someday I'll get Premiere 6.x, till then, is there a free or cheap DV codec I could download? The Canopus USA site has a lot of products; I can't tell what is required.

There's the Panasonic DV codec it's free if you can find it and it isn't read only like the Canopus and MainConcept codecs. Search for "pdvcodec".

Thanks Bondiablo,
I wasn't aware that the Panasonic DV codec was free.

well, I got the Canopus and installed it and nothing has hapened different. Moo's gave me the other one but I don't know what to do with it. Any suggestions other than 'give up'? How do I get them to function?
Thanks -
I've only installed the pdvcodec in win98. To do that you just save the pdvcodec.dll in the c:\windows\system folder and add the line vidc.dvsd=pdvcodec.dll under the [drivers32] section of the system.ini file
Here are the keys you're supposed to add for win2k but I never bothered to try it.
Win2k
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc]
"pdvcodec.dll"="Panasonic DV Codec"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
"vidc.dvsd"="pdvcodec.dll"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaResources\icm\vidc.dvsd]
"Driver"="pdvcodec.dll"
"Description"="Panasonic DV Codec" -

panadv.inf was the only file in the zip file i downloaded. The dil part is missing.
I'll go get the third one next,
Thanks all. -
Canopus, Main Concept, and Panasonic show up as compressers in VirtualDub, but, I still can't open the Klipp19.dv file.
Premiere 5.1 DOES play the clip already saved as a project from the timeline. When I try to play it in the source window it starts that purple flashing then it won't play anymore from the timeline. I have to start up again.
That is as much as i can do.

Actually, the reason you are not geting the PDV codec to work is NOT
becuase it don't, but because it's not associated with the DV's
signature.
You see, evey DV transfer app writes a signature (or KEY) to a DV
avi file as it is transmitting or something of that nature.
synalizer, dvio and others have different Signgures only to their
specifications. Nothing big about it, but i would guess that the
author desinged it as such for purposes only known to the author of
that DV app.
If you don't believe me, than try this, to settle you minds that
which ever DV codec is at fault (as you would assume) do:
* load in an AVI file (can be another DV avi) into vdub
* now, go into the Compresion, and find the Pan DV codec.
* NOW, set it to the Panason. codec, and
* THEN, open it in a different vdub window.
* Look undre File/Information... and see how it NOW reads Pan. condec
Do this for ALL DV codecs, and you should be able to open as ANY
DV codec version, per codec manufactuer. That is, if you encode
with each codec version.
You guys.. you are all missing the point. Its the DV apps that
YOU USE, that depends on which codec will show up under descripiton
or information. However, there may be "generics" out there that
will open any and all DV avis, but this may be a slight missread,
leading you to the wrong conclusion.
Unfortunately, there is NO way you can control (that I'm aware of)
of WHICH DV codec you can save as (encode to) using the proper
Signature (or KEY) that would relate to a certain or given Codec.
If you want your DV's to open with the Panisonic codec, that you
would have to enocde to it using THAT codec. Else, it's up to the
DV app to transfer it according to the KEY it uses, and let what
ever DV reading app import your DV w/ assocated KEY-to-DV codec.
I'm sure there may be a way to "TRICK" it to open in a GIVEN codec,
but currently, I know of none. I am working on this issue as we
speak, but I'm not puling all stops on it. I'm "leasurely" looking
into this.
Well, that's the reason why some of you can't open a DV with a
specific DV codec in mind.

Interesting,
I got the file from here:http://www.8mm.filmshooting.com/scripts/forum/viewtopic.php?t=890&sid=010576df097dda2d...71378aa65c2960
and I have no other way to get any as I do not have a dv cam. Nor do I have a firewire card, although, I saw one for under $50.
No cam, poor me. -
I decided to download the same .dv file. The .dv file will play with QuickTime (a program that you can download from the Apple website). Anyways that clip looks horrible. So it won't give you much of an idea of what DV looks like.

The PanasonicDV codec plays nicely in Premiere and allows Windows Media Player to play the dv clip, also. The Klipp19.dv clip is imported into Premiere 5.1 then exported using the PanasonicDV codec. That is then imported into Premiere and it will edit correctly with no pruple flashing. Now, the dv clip is an avi clip and Premiere likes it and so does WMP.
Panasonic and MainConcept didn't work well together and both saved the same only Panasonic has no watermark, so, that is the one I chose to save. Samples were posted on line from the other thread.
Thank you for your help.
The other thread also states how the first dv clip was made. http://www.8mm.filmshooting.com/scripts/forum/viewtopic.php?t=935 -
I figured this was just a given so I never asked but do you have DirectX installed (latest version is still 8.1b I think)?
-
WOW maybe I am missing something but I capture type 1 avi files directly from my minidv cam to my computer using ulead videostudio. Tmpgenc accepts the files fine. I have to use the canopus converter to be able to use CCE but here again no problem.
