  1. Hi gyus, Im a newbie but I have read all of the post (at least the ones that I found) about the Canopus ADVC-100. I have not gotten this card as of yet, but this will be my X-Mas present for myself!

So my question is, which software is the best one in order to capture with this card. Please list the capturing software that you use, and whether or not is is also good to edit the video before making them into an SVCD(which I plan to do). Also how many minutes will I be able to put on an SVCD, thank you in advance.

well - its not a card but a box .. and you don't really capture per say , but do a DV transcode with it .. so any DV capture app will work fine.

In addition to the Canopus ADVC-100 box you'll need a firewire card. If you're looking for capture/editing software, that's where you'll want to do some shopping around. The cards are pretty much all the same (just don't get one with a Texas Insturments chipset) but the software packages that come with them vary considerably. You can spend as little as $15 for a card and something like a special edition version of Ulead VideoStudio or you can spend a couple hundred+ and get packages that include stuff like Adobe Premiere. Check out the ADS Pyro line, they have a nice product comparison chart that shows all the different packages. Just about anything, with the exception of VirtualDub, will work but Scenalyzer Live www.scenalyzer.com is an excellent program just for capturing and it's only $33.

Definetly go with Vegas Video or Sonic Foundry's cheaper version, Video Factory 2. I have used both, and they ae great to capture and edit with. You can use the ManiConcept encoder, its almost as good as TMPG, or export as a DV file and use TMPG. Use a firewire card without the TI chip set, as they used to not talk correctly with the ADVC 100.

As stated before, the DV transfer is a file transfer, the ADVC does the analogue to DV conversion in the box, and a DV capture is just a transfer from the DV camera through the ADVC 100 to the firewire card.

I use a standard SVCD bitrate in TMPG, CQ80, deinterlace, progressive and its about the best I can get with SVCD standard settings. I'm hoping to get a DVD burner soon.

  8. Thanks for all of your replies. How much of SVCD video can you fit on one cd?

Ulead video studio was given great reviews in Computer Video Magazine. But something like MGI/ROXIO Video Wave was given apawling reviews and there where a few issuse with the software so only scored 40%
