  1. This old unknown branded compaq I had ripped at 5.5X, this new liteon 16X I just picked up only rips at 3.7-3.8X.

Am I missing something here? or do these drives have some kind of inherient limiter?

cause if this is the case, then this POS is going back. I don't need a downgrade.

Check for a newer firmware here - http://www.jlms.com.tw/download.htm

I note a lot of new drives are capped at 2x DVD extract, my Lite-on LTD-163 extracts up to 16x

  4. zippy -

    this one is a 166S.

I did a little playing around - dropped my plextor 40x cdrw off the ide channel and stepped up to the newer 4.71 aspi drivers (from 4.60).

I can now rip at 7X, which is a fair improvement - still not what i expected, but acceptable I guess.

This drive shows up as DMA 3 (the plextor as DMA 2). So really, theres no reason that should have made a difference - since both exceed the 7X i'm getting now (in max xfer rate).

No firmware updates for this drive yet.

Mike-- heh, that drive is already in another box.

I guess I had expected rip speeds in excess of 10x.. oh well. Can't complain for $40 I suppose.

  5. Some other tests of note...

I ripped a bunch of older dvd movies (stuff thats like 3-4 years old). These movies ripped at 11X - however, the newer movies, seem to not be able to get over 5-5.5X.

Not quite sure what the difference is, less perhaps the encryption? Anyhow, 11X is smoking btw.. 6min to rip a movie on average.
