  1. I was doing all my capturing via a ATI TV Wonder VE card. Now that card finally has died out. And I noticed on this camera:

Mini DV Hanydcam Vision / DCR-TRV900

That there is a dv in/out port, look like either a firewire / usb port. Now, can you use this to capture video, WITHOUT a card? or how does this work?

Im very new, so any information would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Nearly, all DV cam has firewire port, which is a very high speed serial transfer to/from your computer.

You need to make sure you have analog pass thru, that uses your DV cam as a capture card.

  4. I assume it is just another name for IEEE1394, just like firewire.

  6. Yes, you need to buy a firewire card with software and cable.

Make sure the DVcam you pick has "Analog Passthru".

I mixed my old Hi-8 capture and miniDV capture, on the same VCD. They are seamless, pretty good.

  8. Just about any firewire card will do. You are better off buying one that comes with a firewire cable as you will also need a cable.

Your camcorder has passthrough. See this link:

You must remember to enable dv out on the camcorder's menu in order to capture from your camcorder. You can Windows Movie Maker or DVIO (or many other programs) to capture DV.
