  1. I capture to avi from VHS tapes, but once converted to MPEG1/MPEG2 I loose quality. Does anybody know of a codec I could use that could compress without such picture quality loss? (besides divx)

Any assistance would be greatly welcomed

I intend on opening the files on a PC once encoded

    Hello,

Give your encoder the cleanest source possible and capture uncompressed video. If you have the space capture with 24bit RGB or Huffy. 5:1 compression would be my personal maximum for a source file. Compressing highly compressed footage (i.e. DIVX or MPEG footage) will only make the already present artifacts worse. Uncompressing an MPEG or DIVX file may help; don't count it though. Use MPEG and DIVX for arciving or distribution only.
