    1) I have 6 VOB files (ie. no IFO's or anything, numbered vts_01_1.vob to vts_01_6.vob.

    How do I burn this (directly?) to a DVD+/- R/RW for playing in a set top player?

    use ifoedit to make the ifo files

    I had actually already tried that, but Ifoedit failed to make the IFO files etc.
