upon viewing captured footage i can not visually tell if there are any frames dropped. how can i be sure my video is intact? is there a utility of some sort i can use to check?

What you have to make sure is that the frame loss that happened is spread out and not concentrated in one area. On an average loosing 1 frame for every 1000 frames is normal and has not visible impact on the video. You can check out the lost frames in VDub. After you finish capturing, open the file in VDub and in the File options you will see "Skip to next Dropped frame". Use this to see if the dropped frames are together or spread out. Hope this helps.
