  1. Ok I have a file that is 138KB/sec.

    It is a tv show that is approximatley 44 minutes.

    I want to convert to get the best quality but I don't know if this is mpeg 1 or mpeg2 quality?

    I know vcd (mpeg1)= 1150 kbps and
    I know svcd (mpeg2)= 2520kbps

    But what is 138KB equal to ?

    Thanks in advance

    P.S. Could you please show the math so I can figure this out in the future.

  2. I don't know if this is what you mean, but 138KB/s is 138 kilo bytes per second. since 1 byte is 8 bits you just multiply 138 with 8 and get 1104kbps.

    Not necessarily, the bitrate for SVCD is variable so it could be lower than this, 2524kbps is the max video bitrate

    138 kbps? It really isn't going to matter what you encode to becase it is going to be garbled. You need at least 128 kbps just for the sound. How big is your hard drive? Well, don't encode to anything larger because it will just be a waste of space since your final video can't look any better than the one you start with.

    Did you read larsli's post ?

    138 kilobytes per second is 1104 kilobits per second.

    Similarly VCD spec is 143.75 kilobytes per second or 1150 kilobits per second.

    A divx encoded at 138 kilobytes per second can look very good.

    KB = Kilobyte
    Kb = Kilobit

    There are 8 bits in 1 byte

  6. Thanks guys

    Now i get it i was doing math wrong

    but now what .
    It is less than vcd quality.

    what will happen when I convert?

    Still learning

  7. You dont mention what format the original file is. If it is mpeg then yes the bitrate is lower than that of VCD, however if it is divx although the bitrate is lower, the quality of the video could be considerably higher than VCD, due to the fact that divx is far more efficient at compressing video than mpeg.

  8. Sorry craig I thought when I said I want to convert it that it was understood that it is avi(not sure what divx it is).My fault

    I really love this show its C.S.I and I want to get the best quality conversion.

    Could you explain this
    however if it is divx although the bitrate is lower, the quality of the video could be considerably higher than VCD, due to the fact that divx is far more efficient at compressing video than mpeg
    .

    Thanks in advance

  9. Assuming the source is the same, if you encode a divx and an mpeg with the same bitrate, the divx will look better due to the fact that its compression technique is better than that of mpeg. For example you could have a 90 minute film encoded with divx which is 600MB in size. You could then encode this to VCD compliant mpeg which would create a 900 MB file. Although the divx is only 2/3 the size of the mpeg it is likely to look better, due to the fact that divx can be compressed more than mpeg without sacrifcing quality.

    138KBps is a fairly high bitrate for Divx, I would try SVCD and maximize the bitrate to fit your 44 mins on 1 disc

  10. Thanks craig

    I've only made vcds in the past but never svcd.
    I was hoping that this would be good good enogh quality so I could try svcd.

    This is going to be a challenge not only have i never made a svcd but this also has ac3 .

    Thanks again
