  1. I have tried 4 or 5 versions of DVD2AVI and can’t seem to make it work. I get the same result each time except from 1.86. 1.86 gives a no response message every time I load the VOB files. All the other versions don’t seem to do anything. I rip using Smartripper and do not have any errors. When loading the VOB files in DVD2AVI, everything looks fine, but when I preview the only two fields that show anything are “VOB Cell ID:2;1 and Remain:Finish” I will save the project, but it will only be a 1KB file with no audio. I am using Win XP on a 1GHZ Athalone with 768 megs of ram and a 75Gig HD. Any help would be appreciated!

If you want to specify what settings you have for the audio and video menu options, it might become clear what is the problem.

What I recommend you do is visit www.doom9.net, and download the Gordian Knot package. This comes complete with DVD2AVI, Smartripper, Virtualdub etc, and acts as a good front-end when converting from DVD. There is also a good guide on its use. Just pick what you need - there is no need to follow the whole process they suggest.

  3. Thanks banjazzer, I used the newbie section in this site as a guide for my video and audio settings.

I was hoping that some one might have had the same problem and post an easy fix. Thanks for your response and I will download the link you suggested. It looks as if the Gordian Knot package also has DVD2AVI. I have tried several different websites that offered a setup guide for DVD2AVI and will get the same error each time. I am sure I have added the information from the setup guides correctly, but if you know something that is not mentioned at http://www.vcdhelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html please let me know. One site showed an example on how to use the start and end option, but I get absolutely nothing when trying to use this option.

The guide looks OK, although it uses a more recent version of DVD2AVI than I do. Your project file should be a few hundred Kb. Now my version doesn't have an mp3 option, so I either demux to get the AC3 or decode to wav. Either way, you should end up with 2 files.

Are you sure the vob files you are ripping are the actual movie!?

  5. They are the VOB files the are genarated from Smart ripper. I choose the first one and it loads all of them. The version I first tried did not have the MP3 option, but when I tried that version it gave a no response error.

Something pretty basic is going wrong here. If you are following the guides exactly, I suggest first of all that you get a software player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD and establish that you can play the vobs you have on your hard disk. My feeling is that something is not going right with the ripping phase.

  7. Thanks banjazzer, the GordianKnot download must have installed drivers that my system did not have. I have tried the same version of DVD2AVI that was included with GordianKnot and could not get it to work. It works great now after I installed GordianKnot. Thanks for your help!
