  1. Hi
I'm new to this forum and already sent this but may have screwed up so will try again. My question is this:

I am capturing VHS with an AIW Radeon 7500 card which gives me a good quality Video MPEG file (720 x 480) and large PCM audio file (48KHz/16 bit). I burn to a 4.7 GB DVD+R without problem but large audio file limits video size/quality. Is there a program to transcode PCM audio to ac3 (to decrease audio file size). Soft Encode seems to longer exist. I could burn to 2 DVD+R's but would rather use a smaller audio file. Any suggestions welcome. I'm willing to pay for the software as long as it isn't too expensive.

  2. I cannot answer your question directly, but before you pursue AC3 audio, make certain that the app you are using to burn the DVD will accept it. I have MyDVD, which came with my Pioneer A05. MyDVD requires PCM audio. If you try to give it AC3, it will convert it to 48 kHz PCM.

Just wanted to give you a heads up.

    Regards,

  5. Being as you are burning your own captures to DVD then I wouldn't bother with AC3. Most DVD players (even the US ones) will quite happily handle .mp2 audio. You can encode your PCM audio to .mp2 several ways. TmpGenc can do it, BeSweet, HeadAc3he, toolame etc. Pick one and give it a try.
