Recently my Buslink (Liteon) dvd-rom started ripping dvds at 2x
It always did 6x before.
How do I make it do 6x again, I did not change any setting on dvd decrypter. All I pretty much id was install uicktime and a few games on the pc.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

that is a very good question, because I have the same question myself! I must of jinxed myself. I saw a post a week or so ago which I responded to which said that they were having the same problem with ripping speeds. I also have a liteon DVD-Rom. Mine used to rip at around 8-10.5X . Excellent Speed to rip at. Then all of a sudden I responded to that post because from my experience most of my movies would RIP at that fast speed, but one or two here and there ripped at 1-2x or so. I responded to that post saying it must be the movie because it was such a drastic speed difference. And since that time each and every single movie I rip is ripped at between 1-2.5x. I have no clue what happened. If anyone has any idea, there are a few people apparently that would be greatly appreciative for the help.

Hey,
lets compare to what we did to our pc before it started ripping at 2x.
Did you upgrade your memory? Install quicktime ot any games?

jj, interestingly enough I did install quicktime. That would seem odd that would contribute to the problem though. Although if you installed it and had the problem, and I did the same, then there may be an issue there. I'm not sure why though. I didn't install any games. It's very frustrating though to say the least. Have you uninstalled Quicktime? If no, I will and I will try the rip speeds then.

This seems pretty extreme!
So is everyone that has experienced this running XP?
BTW download tweakxp for easily making sure XP's DMA/UMDA settings are on.
(Besides making sure your IDE controller DMA is enabled in hardware settings) -
well I got it to work!!!!
I just used WinXP system restore and moved it back 2 weeks.
Quicktime is still installed and it rips at fast speeds again

I have quicktime installed on it also! hehe.
Well I will have to play around with it. Since I refuse to re-install because of that. I hate windows problems like this, heh.
If anyone figured out exactly what caused your issues please post.
Thanks -
I have re-installed XP as well. System restore never seems to work for me. It always says that a restore point could not be created. I will try my rip speeds. I wonder what the hell is causing that. Or more importantly, how long it will last. I was ripping at up to 12x at times. My DVD Rom was ripping so fast it sounded like a 747 getting ready to take off. I am anxious to see if that speed is back.

I tried a bunch of different things, tried all the different IO modes of dvd decrypter. 5.6x is the max I can get out of my Sony 1621, that I have read reviews on it getting 12x max.
(I have DMA on, everything is tweaked as well as it can be, I managed in the process of messing around to even improve my startup time by 8 seconds so I got something at least)
Funny thing is this: I can put a DVD in load up dvd decryptor, rip a vob towards the end of the DVD at like 5x.
Exit, then load smart ripper, rip the same VOB at 3.6x
Exit, then load DVD decryptor back up, rip the same vob now its stuck at 3.6x.
If I eject the DVD then re-insert it, dvd decryptor rips back at 5x that vob.. Weird.. -
what's up all, JJ, got my speeds back up after re-installing XP Home. Just ripped MIB-II at about 10x. Ripped at lightning speed. I'm not sure what causes the speeds to heavily decrease, but I am with Crimp, and I think it has to do with DMA being set back to "PIO" I believe it is. In PC Magazine's November issue titled 104 Ways to Make Windows Work Better, there is an article on DMA, and how XP likes to set PIO as default. I will check out that tweak to keep DMA enabled. Thanks Crimp for that info. I'm glad we are all back at rippin' IT UP...if ya know what I mean. My backups are getting up there....."wink, wink."

@ Crimpshire, I just read the questions you asked. To answer them, I had other issues so I keep a ghost of all of my settings and software on another harddrive. I did a complete format but this time I just installed all of my software and Documents I had on CD-Rs. Pain in the neck, but it cleared up a ton of problems, as well as my ripping speed of course! When I rip from Smart Ripper or Decryptor, the speed starts out at around 5x and slowly works its way up to anywhere between 10 and 12x. I have a 16x dvd rom and have never ripped at that speed. But I don't care. 12x is more then enough for me to rip at. As far at your 5.6x, I wouldn't be too worried. All of us here were getting 1-2x speeds, so you are triple that. When you say your drive can be 12x max, that max is only in certain, and sometimes "rare" situations that you may never see. Just like I can get up to "16x", but it is usually more like around 10-12x, which I am fine with. It's just like a 56k, v.90 modem. How many people can D/L at 56k? How bout NONE. All kinds of marketing scams, just like the 4.7 GB DVd, when it's really bytes in the millions that equates to which is really 4.3 GB's. I'd be happy with your speeds. You may not be at the 747 Jet thunder speed I am, but you are in the "valueJet" category. Good Luck

I have seen this issue first hand. I have two DVD readers and both were capped at 1.6x – 1.7x max. I tried SO many things to correct the issue but in the end the problem only became worse. Ultimately I had to re-image my PC.
Here is a list of what I tried.
- Enabling DMA
- Removing/Reinstalling device drivers
- Updating firmware
- Updating ASPI drivers
- Using XPs restore utility to return to the last “good” date.
No improvement.
Then I tried....
- Tweeking the IO Cache in the registry (Made it larger)
- Installing a trial version of some Windows XP optimizer
These just made my problems worse.
In the end I formated and reinstalled XP. Now my DVDs are ripping normally. -

Well now I am going to have to try putting a different Hard drive in and doing a complete fresh install of XP to see if I see anydifference.
Damn just thinking if it does make a difference, I am going to have to lockdown the PC and after every install of anything will always have to make sure my DVD still rips at the high speed..
I just gotta know now
Also what XP are you guys running? Pro with SR1 updadate installed?
Maybe we can figure out what breaks it. With the previous poster going back to a earlier system state the variable is within that time frame. I think he said he only installed Quick Time.. Can't just be that though that caused it.
Thanks -
i'm running XP Home. Right now I have no SP. The only program I didn't re-install was "quicktime." My DVD Rom is rippin' it up now though. I will create restore points more often now so that I can restore if necessary. I am also amazed that those speeds would be capped like that, and i'm hoping someone, somewhere, including myself, will be able to find the source of the problem. One question I have for "everyone" .....is the DVD Rom drive that this problem occured on a Buslink (LITEON). I know JJ's and mine are. What about the rest of you? If everyone has Buslink, then that would be interesting.

I am running XP Pro w/o SP1. This is what I was running when the I first noticed the problem. Not sure what caused the issue or when the issue happened as I would throw a couple of DVDs in then go fishing. But I will record any changes I make and monitor my performance.

WinXP Pro crates automatic restore points every week for me.
I went 2 weeks back to get the fast rip speeds BUT Quicktime is still installed. So its not quicktime for me, I hope its not a automatic windows update that winxp is dowlading now to be installed.
Yes I always had DMA set instead of PIO.
It must be some stupid program that changes something, I hope it doesnt happen again.
