Hello.
I've been trying to write some dvd's on a Pioneer 104 and seem to have hit a problem. The dvd is in the appropriate video_ts folder on my hard drive and using power dvd plays quite happily, can navigate chapters, special features etc from the menu. I try burning it and I get the same result from Prassi and Imgtools, it just doesnt work properly playing it back on the computer or the xbox dvd player. The menu doesnt run or some of the options just cause it to hang etc. I write at 1x (with verify on which always passes it after checking) on either Choice Gen 3 disks or Traxdata disks. These disks have been fine so far with xbox games or as pc data backups etc so its puzzling the hell out of me why the dvd's are just plain not working. Has anyone got any ideas please?![]()

This sound like it might be a DVD authoring problem. Give us some details of your authoring process and apps used and someone might be able to help.
BTW power DVD, esp with files on the HD, is very tolerant of out-of-spec authored stuff. -
Thanks for the reply.
In the latest instance (its happened on two different projects now so thought i'd better ask before i coaster everything) I copied Star Trek : Insurrection to my HD using smartripper. It should fit onto a dvdr quite happily so I'm simply taking those files, putting them into a VIDEO_TS dir, making a blank AUDIO_TS dir as well and putting them onto a dvdr, firstly with prassi, it did this twice so I just tried Imgtools and it did the same thing.
The other one was my attempt to make Green Mile fit onto a dvdr, I re-coded the documentary at 50% in rempeg and then made the main film to the size suggested in dvdrcalc (basically following the guide on doom9 to reduce the films size)
I used smartripper as I seemd to be having problems dvdcrypter copying dvd's to my hd, they werent playing properly even in powerdvd.
Thank you for the tip about powerdvd being very tolerant of problems, could you advise me on what would be a good player to try stuff out on please so i would perhaps know before burning my project has problems? perhaps the player within ifoedit?
Cheers. -
As far as what you did for the star trek rip, it should be fine. Make sure that the AUDIO_TS and VIDIO_TS directories are in uppercase. Personally I burn with Nero and have no problems though a few people do report incompatibilities. Can't comment of Prassi or ImgTools though.
As far as PC soft DVD players go, all the ones I have ever used seem to be more tolerant of standards non-complaincy than standalone players though I don't think any of them are perfect.
Can't comment of Xbox DVD playing as I don;'t own one, perhaps posting a seperate quaestion might get you some info here. Which version of PowerDvd are you using to play back the burnt discs. I use PowerDvd XP which is very reliable but some older versions did cause me trouble when playing DVD-r so maybe thats part of the problem. The same images would play fine off the HD just like yours. But in my case they did play on my standalone ok so I never investigated but the problem does seem to have gon away since I upgraded to PowerDvd XP. -
Hello again.
I'm using the latest Powerdvd XP as well. I've tried a couple of things since I last posted, I check the ripped files on my hard drive using IFOEDIT after ripping a dvd and clicking "get vts_sectors" and several times its come back and said it's changed some. I've then burned these disks using Nero's DVD option (had never tried it before, thanks for the suggestion) and so far have had 100% success. I'm waiting for the missus to lend me the Star Trek disk again now so I can retry, it errored twice the same way so if it doesnt do it this time I'll have more of a clue what was causing the problem. Strange that "clean" files would need the vts sectors sorting though, perhaps I have some issues with the way its pulling the data from the drive when ripping
Now all I need to do is work out how I can change the disks to UDF so I can read them in the xbox and I'm laughing hopefully
Thanks for your suggestions and advice Bugster! -
You can burn DVD's in Nero using UDF/ISO mode as well as DVD-Video mode. Maybe that will let them play on the Xbox!
