  1. Hello!

I just bought my first Capture Card; HauppaugePVR, and have been having trouble capturing .AVI files without dropping approximately 30 – 50 % of the frames.

I have no problem capturing MPEG 2 files, but because I want to work in Premiere 6.0, I guess I need .AVI files. Though I don’t have much experience with video files, I do understand the concept of capturing original source material in its highest quality; hence, AVI files.

    Here’s my system:

    WIN 98 SE
    900 AMD
    SOYO motherboard w/256 megs RAM
Fujitsu 40 gig MPG3409 AT ide (5400 RPM – 9.5 ms seek time)

My Haupphauge Capture Card allows me to only capture 320 x 240 maximum. The documentation says to use BTYUV format (30 fps) with No Compression for excellent results. Thus far I have ONLY been able to capture a 160 x 120 file without dropped frames. I was able to capture one AVI file at 340 x 240 after setting Premiere’s Frame Rate to 15 fps. (I am assuming that 15 fps is cutting out half of the video from its original source (Video 8 Sony HanyCam).

I have turned off all background systray stuff (virus/fax, etc.) as I understand the hard drive speed is critical during the capture process, so the hard drive was defragged yesterday.

Please help me through this. I am new to DT Video, and only now am I learning about Codecs, Format, and such.

    Thank you!

  2. What program are you using to capture? Vitrual Dub and ACI_IO are the most popular here. I get less dropped frames with AVI_IO (although I've still got an problem with interlacing it seems )

Whens the last time you defragged your HD? And do you have DMA enabled?

  3. Use either Huffyuv2.1.1 or Picvideo Codec as the compression codec for AVI capture. AVICap process lays quite a heavy load on your system no matter how fast it may be.
The draw back on these codecs are the file size that they create. 1min at 320x240 ~ 60-80Mb (depending on the quality of the video source).
If you are using FAT O/S, then you will run into 4Gig file size limitation. Obtain a capture software that has the capability to seemlessly segment the captured file for you during a long capture time line, such as VirtualDub or AVI_IO. AVI_IO does a much better job at the capture segmentation.
Interlacing will not be an issue here, since your capture card already resolved that for you; It limits you to 320x240 resolution. You only need to worry about interlacing issue when you deal with more then 240 vertical lines.

    Hi

I use the Hauppauge and WinTV2000 software that comes with it. When I chose the file type to save, it lists all the codecs on my system Divx, MP4 etc.

I capture with Divx.avi and end up with a very small movie.

Experement with the diffrent codecs to see when/if it drops frames and at what size. If I use standard AVI there is a big loss.

  5. Hi, posted this yesterday, butit seems it wasn't recorded to the forum. I'm trying again.....

    (Thank you for your response!)

    >> What program are you using to capture?

I have been using both the WINTV capture software, and the Premiere 6.0 Capture feature in Premiere 6.0.

    >> Vitrual Dub and ACI_IO are the most popular here.

I am unfamiliar with these programs. Since you say you have had better luck with AVI_O, can you tell me where you got this? Internet download/shareware????

    >> Whens the last time you defragged your HD? And do you have DMA enabled?

HD was defragged yesterday, and NO, DMA was not enabled until now (thanks to you).

    Wingstar:

(Thank you for your response too!)

    >> Use either Huffyuv2.1.1 or Picvideo Codec as the compression codec for AVI capture.

Please help me here. I am new to this, so I can tell you that I have none of the above codecs listed in any of my software (WINTV 2000 or Adobe Premiere 6.0)

Where can I obtain these codecs, ???

    >> If you are using FAT O/S, then you will run into 4Gig file size limitation.

I am running WIN98 SE. Is this a “FAT O/S”?

    >> such as VirtualDub or AVI_IO. AVI_IO does a much better job at the capture segmentation.

I’ll search for this software, and thank you very much for you coments.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Simmel

  6. I have the PVR, I capture at the 352x240 so I can make VCD's. I capture in AVI with -0%- frames drops. But then again I am using 1.2 gig thunderbird with 512 megs of ram on win98.
I use Ulead 6.0 with the Hollywoodfx silver plug-in and I can make perfect family music video's, uncompressed AVI at 4min. is 1.7gigs the down onto XVCD at 2520 using TMPGE Beta b in about 9min. turns out to very good quality at 70-90megs at MPEG1 XVCD. In the last couple of years I have mage 40-50 music videos this way with at the most 1 frame drop every 400-500 frames.
make sure you have the latest Indeo codecs installed.
I have my card set to 29.97 frames, with audio at 22,100 16 bit stereo. set at BTYUV with the video buffers set at 500.

  7. TO ALL:

Thank you. VirtualDub seems to have solved all my problems.

I am currently capturing .AVI files and successfully editing them in Premiere.

What a great Forum! I am new to the subject, and will be studying things here for some time to come.
