    1) you can't really compare SVCD to divx. however, in terms of quality: filesize ratio, most people would say divx is better (i.e. same filesize for SVCD and divx, divx will be better quality). yet, there are other non-quality issues you have to deal w/ in terms of using divx:

    a) divx doesn't work on standalone dvd players. there's been talk about standalone divx players, but those seem to be pretty expensive (i.e. you could by a dvd burner instead). so, it seems the only reasonable way to watch divx on your tv is through tv-out. i've heard xbox has been hacked to play divx on tv, but since xbox is essentially a computer, it's basically the same as above.

    b) divx is more CPU intensive. if you have slower CPU or you run multiple proggies in the background, then divx might play slower.

    c) in terms of burning, SVCD does have an advantage. if you wanna burn a divx, you can only do so as a data disc, which means max. on a 80 min. CD-R is 700 MB. however, SVCDs are burned in mode 2, which means that you can fit nearly 800 MB on a 80 min. CD-R. so, in terms of burned movies, a 2 disc svcd will have nearly 200 more MB to use than a 2 disc divx. this should make SVCDs on a more equal footing in terms of quality when compared with divx, in addition to the added benefits.

    2) when making rips, there's always an exchange between quality and # of discs. it's up to you. would you rather add an extra disc to get great quality, or get rid of a disc and sacrifice some quality.

as for software, dvd2svcd is a good all-in-one proggie. i personally prefer to use multiple proggies separately (i.e. smartripper->dvd2avi->tmpgenc). it's up to you.

as for guides, do a search on this website for sefy's ultimate newbie guide. that gives you a great start to make your rips.
