Sorry if this the wrong forum, I looked and could not find a DVD reader forum. (Found stand alone player)
Was curious if anyone could tell me if they have actually had a DVD reader rip at higher then 4 or 5x speed.
Reason is because I have an older Pioneer S303 slot loading SCSI DVD reader that I have been using to RIP with and it's rated at 6x but I never see it go that high.
Before I replace it, wanted to make sure there are readers that do go that high. (I understand it will vary speed wise as it goes through the disk) Just wanted to know if this 16x is just nonsense and sticking with this older 6x is fine.
Please tell me what drive + model # if your's does go higher.
Thanks.

Remember that ripping speed is not entirley dependant on the DVD ROM drives read speed (although it does play a fairly important part of it). If you are ripping using one of the popular ripping programs (smartripper, DVDdecrypter etc) you have to remember they are not simply reading the data from the disc. It is also necessary to decrypt the data stream and write it to the HD. Therfore CPU speed, memory size/speed and HD speed are also important factors to consider. (and application efficiency!)
Also remember that increasing ripping speed gives diminishing returns. Say you can rip a DVD at 1x speed and it takes an hour. Ripping the same DVD at 2x speed takes 30 mins, an improvement of 30 mins, 4x speed takes 15 mins, an improvemnt of 15mins and 8x speed 7mins 30 secs, an improvemnet of only 7mins 30 secs, and so on. So unless you Rip a LOT of DVD's, is it really worth it going from 4 to 6 or 8 speed ripping.
Obviously its up to you, just thought I would mention it! -
OK, thanks much for the responces!
I was thinking of getting a new DVD rom reader anyhow, I liked the slot idea when I got it a couple years ago, but it actually winds up scratching disks sometimes so I might just replace it anyhow. -
my pioneer 116 rips up to 10 X avarage 6-7 x

I have a 4x Mitsumi and a 12x (dont know brand) The 4x is actually faster! I let DVD2SVCD do the rip for svcd's and its about 1100KB on the 12x and 1500 on the 4x. Kinda sad eh? Thats really like 1x speed isnt it? The 12x is in a dualp3 1ghz @ 133fsb with 1.25 Gig of ram all scsi hard drives. The only IDE is the dvd rom! The 4x is in a Tbird 1.4 @ 147fsb for a final speed of 1.54ghz. 512DDR, all IDE drives. Sounds kinda backwards dont it?

Heh, that does sound kind of backwards, but I've heard the same thing from other people talking about CD-ROM drives. One guy found that his 6x CD-ROM was, overall, faster than the newer 32x. The 6x was old, but it was a high-quality drive while the 32x was a cheap, generic model.

My liteon gets up to 10x or more on a really good day. Pretty fast on a bad day too.

Also bare in mind that the the ripping speed is also affected by how many blocks needed to be decrypted. Not all blocks on a DVD is encrypted. In my experience it varies quite a lot.
