  1. If a dvd player cannot play (s)vcds, is it possible to burn the (s)vcd back onto a dvdr, in such a way that the dvd player will be able to play it?
If so how do I do it?

I am aware that the quality will only be as good as the original (s)vcd

  2. Yes it can, and it won't be exactly as good as the original SVCD, as reencoding will always make you loose quality. Most likely very far, but every conversion will degrade the quality.

  3. Standard SVCD resolution(480x480/576) is not a suitable resolution for dvd-r's.Standalone players accepts only certain resolutions playable from dvd's.These are for example 352x288,352x480/576,704x480/576,720x480/576.

If your mpeg is in some of those resolutions, you can burn it to dvd and watch it through your standalone player.Standard vcd resolutions are also acceptable.Otherwise you must re-encode your files.
