  1. I downloaded some TV shows in (DivX).avi format. I used TMPGEnc ver. Beta 12e to convert them. I then used Roxio EZ CD Creator 5 Platnium to burn them. I followed these instructions to convert:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm

    And these instructions to Burn:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/easycd.htm

Everything seemed to go smooth, but when I tried to use it on my Sony DVP-S360DVD player, it says no disc. Yes it does accept VCDs. This is my first attempt at this. No I've never played other VCDs on my DVD palyer. No I havn't had the opportunity to try to play these discs on another DVD player.

Below is the Menu structure created n the VCD:

    \CDDA
    \CDI
    \KARAOKE
    \MPEGAV
    \MPEGAV\MUSIC01.DAT 226,638Kb
    \SEGMENT
    \VCD
    \VCD\ENTRIES.VCD 2Kb
    \VCD\INFO.VCD 2Kb
    \VCD\LOT.VCD 64Kb
    \VCD\PSD.VCD 1Kb

  2. Could be a million things. First the easy one. Did you use a CD-RW? CD-R's will not work in Sony.

I have the same machine and I regret every buying it.

Sony Equipment really non-flexible. I recommend to everyone I talk to never to buy Sony. They have just lost it.

  3. I have a DVP-S560 DVD player that just would not play any homemade Video/SuperVideo CD's on any media except for Circuit City DigitalMedia 4x ReWritables. You may want to give a ten pack a try for your model.

A blanket statement that "CD-R's will not work in a Sony" is a load of crap. I have a Sony DVP-S500D and TDK, Fujifilm, Sony, and Iomega CD-R's all work perfectly in it.

A much more correct statement would be: "It is possible that your particular MODEL will not play VCD's on CD-R's" (as is the case with my brother's Sanyo. It plays pressed VCD's just fine, but not burned ones.

Hi I have the Sony DVP NS400D, it also plays any brand of disks, and also NTSC/PAL

With an aditional chip fitted, no Macrovision problems or region. http://www.techtronics.com for spec on all DVD players.

I would think you should try a branded CDR, like TDK

    http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-sony-dvp-s360-360-multi-region-dvd-player.html

    Says it supports:
    Plays DVD, VCD, CD
10 Bit Video DAC/96kHz, 24 Bit Audio DAC
    Advanced Smooth scan
    Magic Pad interactive on-screen menu
    CD, DVD text
Sony Precision Drive base mechanism with Quick Access Drive
Video Bit rate and disc layer indicator
    50 disc custom parental control

But does not say "CD-R/RW playback" Like mine does ??

  6. Well I agree that it's the media. My CR-RW worked fine. I've only tried FUJIFILM CD-R's thus far. I think the key is the backing color. I have Prime Perhipials & some TDKs here that I'll try before I start looking for silver backed CD-R's. I found a link in another conversation to a place on htis web site that compares features on DVD players. I read most of the users statments and it seems they differ from one player to the next, even though they all had the same model. 50% of the people said they could use any CD-R the rest said they could only use CD-RWs.

  7. OK OK.

My DVP S530 will not play anything CD-R. The docs I've read are that Sony has made thier players not read CD-Rs on purpose as a way to stop pirates, particularly of music CD's. Sony has to much invested the the artist revenue

I'm glad yours work. Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php for Sony

then checkout Pioneer. Fewer restiction fewer problems.

It's not absolute but in general Sony Sucks.

  8. According to the guide you suggested the Sony DVP-NS400D/S plays all layers of CD-R's & CD-RW's. Price is about $165.00 on Yahoo! Shopping. It's got more features than my DVP-S360 & it costs less! I spent $267.00 in Jan 01 on my current model. I'm going to Circuit City tommorow to test my VCD's on the DVP-NS400 if they work, then I'm selling my current one, and ordering the new one!

  10. You want a DVD player that will play anything, buy a APEX.
    Walmart sells a 500W for $99
    Sams sell a 660 for $119
The 660 firmware is flash, so it can be upgraded to turn off macrovision and be Region free.
Both players plays any CD-R's and CD-RW's and both will play the new 99min. CD-R's.
    They play the following
DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD.
I also own a toshiba 2050 and regret ever getting it, plays VCD's but not SVCD's and only the blue and blue silver CD-R's.

I paid £237 $379, with the chip fitted, think the chip was £84 $134 fitted by them, the price you quote sounds very cheap.

http://www.techtronics.com by the way, were the people who supplied DVD players to the US Astronauts see the read up on the site, they also had this chip fitted

But anyway, I have had no problems with any CDR, not tried a CDR-W . I also made a NTSC disk by mistake and as you know it plays NTSC VCD as well. With the chip fitted Macrovision is disabled, and you can skip FCC intros and skip other DVD intros that normally you can't skip. Multi region is also available, but I guess you wont be buying it from them.

  12. ALL the Sony models can read PRINCO and VivaStar CD-R (I've tried them on 6 diferent Sony models).

The NS-400D is the first model(or maybe one of the firsts) from Sony that can read virtualy all the brands of CD-R's.
