Is this possible? I have TMPGEnc, however when I get to step 2 of 5 and go to add the file that I want to convert it's says "The file couldn't be open or unsupported" Has anyone do this conversion before and are able to help me out? Any helpful resonse will be greatly appreciated.

m2v is the usual extension for an MPEG-2 video stream. I've also seen actual MPEG-2 files with that extension. If it's got sound, it's probably already an MPEG-2 file, you can just rename it to file.mpg. If there's no sound it's likely to just be a video stream, but it's still MPEG-2.

Two things you can do. Use DVD2AVI to create a project file and frameserve to TMPG (see guides on this site or www.doom9.org) or install a software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD, these will then install an MPEG2 decoder on your system that TMPG will use to decode the m2v file. In the environmental settings you may also need to increase the priority of the Directshow source.

Thanks for your help. I'm now trying to put it into .avi using the virtual dub tool. However when I go to open the file to try and convert it a message comes up saying "MPEG Import Filter: pack synchronization error". I have already renamed the .m2v file as an .mpg through ms dos promopt. Does anyone know how I can get around this problem?

You get that error because VirtualDub can not directly open MPEG-2 files, only MPEG-1. Your movie will have to be frameserved.
