  1. Hi,

I've got a Canon ZR40 mini DV camcorder connected to an SIIG firewire card (OHCI 1.0 compliant). I'm running Windows XP home edition, and the OS recognizes the firewire card, and seems to think everything is great.

But when I connect the camcorder via the firewire and put it in VCR mode, I can't get it and the system to talk. I'm using a shielded Belkin cable, by the way.

I have tried three different programs:

ULead Video Studio 3.5 - under capture settings, I select DV from the drop down list. It pauses for several seconds, then flips itself back to the AVI setting.

PowerVCR II - when I click record from DV, it immediately pops up a message satating that it cannot communicate with the camera, and prompting me to connect it and retry.

Windows Movie Maker - under Driver, there is no option for DV - only my Leadtek WinFast 2000 XP video tuner/capture card.

SIIG, the firewire card maker, claims no additional drivers are needed. Canon claims the same. I can't help feeling I'm missing some driver or piece of software needed to make the applications see the camcorder.

By the way, I have a friend who has a DV setup, and he connected the Canon into his and it worked perfectly - so thank God, the camera is working!

    Any ideas? Thanks!

  2. Most likely, you have a bad card or incorrect driver install.

Has ANY firewire product worked on your card? Can you try installing the card in your friend's machine? Or can you return it for a replacement?

Did you use the same cable on your friend's PC? It could be as simple as a bad cable.

Have you tried more than one port on your card? Could be a single bad port.
