  1. I've been converting a lot of old VHS tapes to CVD on DVD-R. Everything was going great until the last month when suddenly some of the files are showing up in whatever ratio 352x480 is (tall and thin). Checking out these files they seem to have 720x480 in the file info. I'm seeing this most with files captured to a mini-DV tape and firewire transferred using Studio-7. I see it 100% of the time if I use Windows Movie maker and firewire. I rarely see it using Virtual-dub and traditional composite or sVHS capture but it does happen. I've tried checking and unchecking the 4:3 box on TMPEGenc (I thought accidentally hitting the 4:3 720x480 button was the culprit) but no effect. Some seem to just be "captured that way" and nothing seems to get them back into the proper ratio. I always use templates and this is a now and then thing which makes it even more confusing. Any guesses where I'm setting things up wrong? Anything that can be done once the wrong ratio gets into the file to correct it short of re-encoding?

  2. Do they show incorrectly in software playback or on the DVD player?

Software is variable on showing the correct aspect ratio and can be easily changed, standalone player should always be correct unless some whacky resolution has been set.

There is a DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) flag in the file but apparently many players do not use it, although I think many software players do.

  3. They give wrong aspect ratio on both computer and TV. Seems to occur during capture. Once it's wrong, it stays wrong no matter what I do in TMPEGenc or CCE or in any VirtualDub post processing.

  4. I thought that there must be a header flag like the DAR (didn't know what to call it though). Was hoping there was something I could do to reset it correctly without re-encoding. Plus, obviously wondering where I got it set wrong in the firstplace?!?!!???

  5. Yes, you need a utility to fix the H and V information in the dat files.
Unfortunately, I can't find my copy ( which is a freeware in DOS ) to help you.

Well I know you said you set the aspect ratio to 4:3 but just to make sure, get pulldown and its gui. With it you can set the aspect ratio flag to 4.3 without re-encoding.

SingSing, what dat file? Are you maybe thinking VCD instead of CVD?

  7. You are right. It is the mpeg file for CVD that the utility fixed.

  8. (The program is called "Pulldown" Adam? Know where to get it? Didn't see it under tools here or at Doom9.) Doh! nevermind found it.

Plus any guesses where I'm getting it wrong in the first place. Plus how using the same saved/loaded template I get the wrong ratio on one capture, then capture it again and it's fine?
