  1. Hello,

This is my first post here - excuse me if I sound dumb.

I bought an HP 200i DVD burner 2 weeks ago and have made several DVD's from video I captured from my DV cam. Used Pinnacle Studio 7 and NeoDVD for 2 of them. Burned them first on DVD+R and they won't play in anything. Then I tried the +RW DVD (HP & Fuji) and they play in my set top player (Sanyo) and my PS2, so I decided to do my own "test" and went to the Sony store, Future Shop (Canada) and several other stores that sell various makes/models of set top DVD players - the +RW played in 65 different machines and I was very happy, but from what I've read the +RW isn't the most stable (not sure why) and that I should be using the +R DVD's to make movies, yet I can't get them to work in anything I make, while the +RW's work in everything. Does anybody know why this is happening? Could it be the DVD's themselves? Just seems strange to have one type of DVD work awesome and the other one not.

Thanks for your help and if I've posted in the wrong place, please let me know and I will repost in the correct place.

  2. its all about structures, you need an AUDIO_TS along with
VIDEO_TS folder when u burn ur dvd,its just an empty folder,
give u a higher compaptabilty ratio....

  3. Studio 7 probably didn't support +R given that the format +R wasn't yet released when it came out. I believe that Studio 8 does. The latest Nero should be able to burn DVD+R (once that you have generated a Video_TS and Audio_TS folders). I use Dazzle DVD complete and it works very well with DVD+R disks.

See this website for more help:

  4. Thanks so much for the tips - I'm going to pick up Studio 8, since I like that quite a bit and will use the neoDVD to create the Video_TS and Audio_TS files and burn it with that. I'll check back if it works!

  5. Please post you finding I just Ordered a HP DVD200xi and would like to know your findings so I can make a note of this for my future burns, also could you post , are you getting 2.4x burn speed on all the media you are using and what media brands you are using.
Also have you tried using the bitsetting program to change how +R and +RW is read in DVD players?

  6. It worked!!!! Well, at least I can play my new DVD+R on my Sony PS2 (it's new), but my old Sanyo set top (3+ years) won't play it (it'll play the HP DVD+RW and Fuji DVD+RW ones fine), but it doesn't always work with commercial DVD's, so that wasn't a surprise. I used a Sony DVD+R disc (first time for that brand, as I usually use Fuji or HP). I haven't tried the HP DVD+R disc yet, so that might be why it doesn't work in my old Sanyo, so will try that next. Going to burn that disc next and take it out tomorrow to do a test at several stores that sell DVD set top players.

I took 4 hours off from work this morning and took the +RW disc I burned before I did the DVD+R disc and tested it in about 75 players today (the store personnel must think I'm nuts) and every single one of them worked without a problem, but wanted the DVD+R to work, since they're cheaper (I can get blank DVD+R in bulk at $3.59 CAD if I buy 100 at a time) - I have samples coming that I ordered online today.

So, to continue -- I bought Studio 8 with Hollywood FX Plus, took the video I had in .avi format, did my editing and used on of Studio 8's menus (very cool and easy to customize), added music and created a DVD file (disc copy to my harddrive). Then, I took the advice above and got Nero updated for DVD and simply opened that, which had the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders and opened up my video in the Pinnacle folder I saved it to and put in all .BUP, .IFO and .VOB files into the Video_TS folder and burned it! Nero burned it at the 2.4X speed and 20 minutes of DVD took about 3 to 4 minutes to burn. I am so pleased I'm justa jumpin'!!! The DVD quality is superb - it was of a horse standing and then moving quite quickly and no loss that I can determine and I'm pretty picky. I must say again, that Studio 8 (with the update from Pinnacle for that version) is the easiest authoring program I've used and I highly recommend it.

Now, onto the HP DVD+R disc and I'll check back to let you know how that one worked, then I'll let you know how the "trials" go.

  7. You can also try burning a +R disk with Studio 8 to see if you get better results than Nero.

  8. Tried burning it with Studio 8 and it didn't work in my set top or the PS2. Not sure why that is - maybe I'm missing a setting in Studio 8 -- am going to check into that more.

Also, have been doing some more searching and have read that the +RW discs are more compatible with set top players than the +R discs are. I do know that the +RW's work in my old Sanyo set top, PS2 and all other set tops I tested.

I did burn an HP +R in Nero and it didn't work, then I went back into Nero and there is a setting for Horizontal Scaling and I set it to DVD+R and the HP +R disc worked! Still not in my old Sanyo set top, but fine in the PS2. Am heading out shortly to "test" my DVD+R (both the Sony & HP discs) in various set top players and am going to make a list of players (makes & models) of which ones worked and which didn't.

  9. +R disks are more compatible than +RW. Although some software make better +R disks than others (I am not sure why). Here is a list if you want to save time:

Perhaps, you can ask your questions on this forum (experimenting on +R disks can be expensive...):

  10. It's not 100% accurate. I have submitted my Sanyo set top player there with the fact that it works fine with the +RW, but not +R and that was about 2 -3 weeks ago and it's still not on that list. There are other machines I've tested that are about 3 years old that work fine, but not on the list either as well as many new ones - have submitted those details to that site, but they've not been included, yet. What I'm doing is expanding on the list for my own use (inc. customers) and have access to many stores and literally ever make/model of DVD set top player on the market, all within 15 minutes of home. Once I finish my testing of the new +R discs I've burned, I'll submit those to that site too. They are probably really busy and eventually they'll put the information up. I will post it here too (gotta make sure I do it in the right forum?).

  11. Yes dvdplusrw.org only has one moderator: Jorg. So it takes time.

Nevertheless, a DVD player that can play +RW disks will almost always play DVD+R. I have a Lenoxx DVD-2002 player that I though could only play DVD+RW (with the compatibility setting turned on). At first, I was burning DVD+R with Nero that could play in my PS-2 but not in my Lenoxx. Then I decided to make an exact copy of a French commercial DVD that I own and it played in my Lenoxx and my PS-2 (French DVDs are often less than 4.3 gig and often are not macrovision or CSS protected). This little experiment leads me to believe that not all software create good DVD+R discs. I have had good sucess with Dazzle DVD complete (so I am sticking to it). I haven't used Nero in a while but apparently, the later versions have improved. Perhaps, you can try a similar test by making an exact copy of an old classic movie (they often are less than 4.7 Gig and are not macrovision or CSS protected).
