Hey everyone

I've been doing the SVCD thing for a while and am about to get into DVD making. My first project is converting an out of print laser disc (LD) to DVD. Based on my previous experience, I have a pretty good idea of how to go about this, but I wanted to list my guess at the steps here and have all of you experts tell me what you think! Any advance warnings of what mistakes I may be making are appreciated.

- Capture all sides of the LD to DV each in it's own file (this will probably make 4 large AVIs since the disc has 4 sides). I'll be using Scenelyzer.

- Load the AVIs into Virtual Dub, edit them together and save the entire file as one new, huge, single DV AVI (I'm assuming that if I use 'direct stream copy' the new file will NOT be recompressed). Then save the audio as an uncompressed, 48Khz wav.

- Load the new AVI into TMPGenc and encode the DVD as video only (I've read that I should keep the sound as a seperate, uncompressed file).

- Load the encoded video and uncompressed audio files into the authoring software and make the DVD.

I know this is a very simple look at the procedure, but I just want to be sure I have the basics right. I do have one question: I've read that authoring software can limit the amount of time the movie can be (my friend with a Mac says he can only make an hour, and I just read somewhere else that the limit on a PC may be only 90 minutes).

Is this true or can I put a 2 hour movie on a 4.7 gig DVD-R? The movie in question is very widescreen, so I am not worried about encoding quality - the black letterbox bars will leave plenty of bits for the picture.

Any hints as to a better way to do this are most welcome!
