I've seen numerous posts and "how to" instructions regarding converting or burning bin/cue files, but I haven't found anything explaining what they are. Why convert/burn a vcd/svcd/etc. in this format?
Thanks

As I understand it, there could be two reasons to use this method. One is that you can do it without purchasing any software. There is burn software available as Freeware. The second reason is for those of us with problems FF/RW. Using a .bin file solves the problems of not being able to FF/RW with Nero burned (S)VCD's.
Good luck

WMike ? Not sure what you mean
BIN is a CD Image and the CUE is a CUE Sheet used as "directions" to burn it.
you can extract the MPEG from the BIN but not sure how that helps the FF/RW problems
so if I were to send/post a full CD to someone the easiest method would be to make an image of the CD and if you use CDRWin that image is in BIN/CUE format - the CUE is just a text file.
many other programs make images - Adaptec EZ CD for example but it's not as reliable
the reason you see instructions for extracting the MPEG from a BIN is because many BIN/CUE's are posted to the newsgroups and some people would rather extrat the movie to watch on their HD as opposed to burning it to a cd first. -
Why does burning a .bin help FF/RW? Hell if I know. I just know that if I burn with Nero using the SuperVideo selection, no FF/RW. If I burn a .bin, it works. And I think I'm far from alone.......

What WMike is saying is true. If I burn a SVCD using Nero, neither FF or RW works but GOTO works(I have a Apex 660). If I burn the same mpg in WINonCD the FF and RW work but GOTO stops working. Now if I make a image of the mpg using VCDimager and burn with CDRwin or Fireburn FF, RW and GOTO all work. I don't know what VCDimager does buts its a tool everyone with a Apex DVD player should have.

From Stinky's comments, I gather that bin packages the contents of a cd into a single file. Kind of like a zip file without compression. Is that about right?
Thanks -
koko: it's not compress but an image - meaning a raw sector by sector copy of the cd into one file.
so if the cd is 601 meg the image is 601 meg
WMike: I didn't say you were wrong - I was just curious as to how that could be - my DVD will ff/rw anything so I'm not famlier with that problem -
Hi Stinky,
You're one lucky guy from my perspective. My Apex will play darned near anything, but what taco said is exactly my experience, except I haven't gotten both GOTO and RW/FF to work at the same time. That's why I'm asking a question on the authoring board about future compatibility, if there will be a problem down the road using the .bin format to burn. I certainly wish I didn't have the extra step of going the image route. But if I want the ff/rw function...........
Good luck
