  1. Can any one tell me if its possible to convert a mpg (836mb 84min) to a smaller size. Can I convert it to 700mb so I can burn it to one cd. It doesnt matter if I lose some quality. Thankz a bunch

  2. You can reencode and lower the bitrate creating an XVCD that will fit on one disc (you will loose quality). Or you could overburn to a 90min disc, providing your burner supports it.

  3. What program can i change the bitrate then? I cant change it in TMPGenc..

  4. You can change it in TMPGEnc, you need to load the unlock template first though. It is in the template/extra directory.

  6. One other thing, under advanced setting, stream type. Set this to mpeg1 VCD (non standard). If you leave this as mpeg1 VCD, when you come to burn with nero it will pad it out and you will find the file won't fit on your disc.

Excuse me for not understanding, but I don't. Where do you tell TMPEG that you want to create a XVCD out of a SVCD? I unlocked the template (I guess that is moving the unlock-file to the Template-dir), but I can't tell what to do with the file.

  8. An XVCD is basically a non standard VCD. So if you wanted to create an XVCD so a movie would fit on 1 disc, you would load the VCD template. Notice that most of the settings cannot be changed because if they were it would no longer be VCD compliant. But as you want to make an XVCD we are not worried about that. Load the unlock template (this does not mean moving it to the templates directory, click on the load button and select it), this allows you to change all of the setting, so now you can lower the bitrate so that your movie will fit on 1 disc.

Great, thanks a lot!! Does it matter which of the templates (Pal or ntsc)you load?

Would this also be applicable with SVCD - ie creating an XSVCD? I encoded an avi to a 794 MB SVCD, which fits perfectly on a 80 min CD, and then had to sync the audio, which enlarged the movie to 815. Thus, what I need to cut is 20 MB, is this the best way to do it?

I don't have a clue. I used the GoldWave sync-template found here, which added 20 MB to both files that I used it on. I

If you can possibly re-encode the original source file (assuming it's not mpg) at a lower bitrate this will give you much better quality mpg than re-encoding the mpeg at a lower bitrate.
You can re-encode the mpeg file, but in my experience this effectively doubles the number of mpg encoding artifacts in the resulting video file. In short, a re-encoded mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 file looks significantly worse (to my eyes) than the original AVI file encoded at a lower bitrate.
    Your mileage may vary.
