OK. I've searched the forums regarding the Apex 660 and SVCD playback. My DVD player's firmware is 660-9MM, and I've never been able to successfully play an SVCD without having to navigate through the "MP3" folder-structure screen.
I've burned an SVCD by the following procedure:
- Capture using Adobe Premiere from DV camera
- Encode MPEG-2 using TMPG
- Burn SVCD using Nero 5.5.9.14
- all following the instructions provided from this site.
The resulting SVCD isn't necessarily a coaster, but it's annoying to navigate through the folders just to watch the movie. Now, I've tried the same CD with my father-in-law's Apex 1500 DVD Player and it plays perfectly including the SVCD menu et all. I thought the Apex 660 supports SVCD. If so, why does my player display the mp3 folder everytime I insert an SVCD.
I've read some posts about some people playing SVCD on their Apex 660, how is that possible if all I get is the MP3 menu? Could it be the authoring or the encoding (I followed all the instructions from VCD Help)? If that's the case, why does it play fine on the 1500 and not on my 660?
BTW, I've also tried unchecking / checking the SVCD compliant option in Nero; neither one has any effect on the 660. Should I downgrade my firmware to another version?
Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer to your questions but I suggest that you look at this website's forum:

Hello I have apex 660 and this is what i do. When you use nero don't use the wizard. Select the cd icon in the upper left hand corner. Then select the svcd icon and you select new from there drag your file over and burn it from there. Now when playing you must turn the PBC OFF first before you begin playing. Hope this works for you !!!!!

Thanks. I'll try that. The funny thing is that the MP3 menu comes up before I could even do anything (after the SVCD is loaded).
When burning with Nero, I don't use the wizard and followed your post, but still get the same result.

Nope... still doesn't work. I've got a friend who made an SVCD on his MAC and it works on my AD-660, even the PBC works.
Now, how the heck did he do that? I wonder... maybe it's the encoding that's causing the problem. What should the VBR settings be in TMPG for SVCD MPEG2 format? BTW, his SVCD MPEG2 file was encoded in 720x480 and it still plays on my AD-660. What gives? -
What folder format are you using?
mpegav/entrysvd or mpeg2/entryvcd. Try switching the two standards.
Is there a segment folder present? One of my apex's (500ad) requires this to be present. the segment folder holds menus, and stills. Create a menu in nero if it doesn't have this folder already.
You should use VCDeasy, Nero doesn't allow me to FF/RW or time search correctly.
I personally use I Author for all my SVCD ventures, and it works perfect.
