  1. While experimenting, in the capture driver settings, I selected the Windows somptin or other driver as the default over the Brooktree somptin or other driver which had been working. Now when I try to go into capture mode it gives me an error about the driver and won't let me in - so I can't change it back. Is there a way to get back to the BrookTree driver?

Try re-installing VirtualDub. Or doing a clean install.

  3. Tried that. There's really no install, you just unzip and run. It must store it's settings somewhere on the machine because the new one acted just like the original. A search of the registry found nothing that looked like configuration settings though. Searching the hard drive for files with "virtualdub" found nothing. I'm stumped.

  4. Sounds like the problem is with your capture drivers. Try completely uninstalling and reinstalling them.

  5. There is no actual process of installation or uninstallation for VirtualDub. You just unzip it and go at it. VirtualDub save all the preferences and settings in the registry. To correct for the capture driver problem, go to the registry via START-RUN=> <type in> REGEDIT => <enter>. Once in the registry editor, EDIT-FIND =><virtualdub>, and it will show up under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Freeware/VirtualDub.
Delete the folder VirtualDub to restart the software subscription. It is sorta like uninstalling it.

  6. Thanks Wingstar, that did the trick. I had seen that folder when I checked the registry before, but, it didn't look like it had anything to do with configuration settings. Oh well, learn something new every day!

    Thanks again.

  7. Wow, you managed to mess up VirtualDub's settings so much that it couldn't access the card? VirtualDub has a pretty intense search routine for finding the drivers. What version of VirtualDub are you using?

By the way, that was some good thinking, wingstar.

  8. Glad to be of some assistant.
All version of virtualdub save the settings in the registry. There is another place in the registry where it keeps the latest revision as well. Sometime you have to delete it too to fix a certain problem. Virtualdub is an excellent software created by Avery Lee; However, this software is very touchy at times....There are many other settings you can tweak in it to make it sings with passion If Avery Lee every get to update virtualdub to use WDM driver, that day will be a sweet day indeed!

  9. Avery is working on WDM capture support, so keep your fingers crossed.

Well, I believe all I did was select the WDM driver. It had been working with the BrookTree. After picking the WDM out of the drop down list, it wouldn't let me get back in to change it. IMO the program should be changed to allow the selection of the driver before actually going into capture mode. So, although I'll take credit for messing my machine up five ways to Sunday on numerous occasions, this time it wasn't really a concerted effort on my part.

  11. VirtualDub saves best in AVI format... And, it only uses CODECs that are installed in the machine. If you goof around with CODECs too much, you *can* get yourself into a pickle and have a hard time getting back into an operational state. Its not VD thats causing the problems, its a conflicting CODEC most likely.

  12. Yup, that can happen, HTH. I just thought strange because I've also messed up VirtualDub using a WDM wrapper for my BT878 card, but VirtualDub managed to find the correct driver.
