xvid converting to mpg problem

i have managed to convert a few xvid's to mpg previously but am having trouble with reign of fire. it gets to about 30mins into the film and the picture hangs- sound is still going. I have tried to convert about eight times now but have not been successful. I have altered the vfapi settings as mentioned in one of the guides-have tried virtualdub to resave as avi-have tried splitting the file in two and then trying to convert(to chop out where it hangs) but both files are hanging. Does anybody have any ideas of what i can do?

Run the DiVX file through [b]AVIFixed[b], which can be downloaded here http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avifix.html

Then start again (extract audio etc.)

thanks for the help but unfortunately that didn't work - however i should have tried something first before posting the question, that was resave as divx in virtualdub - that worked and i now have a working version thanks for the help anyway
