  4. Double density? Doesn't exist.

Double sided - any good burner worth buying can burn on double sided media. But most software will not say "flip over to burn more". You'll have to author each side like they were separate disks.

double density isnt availableto the general public yet. If sony says that their burner can burn double density dvd-r's, surely they had to have tested this out on a double density disc

  9. Baker - the disk you linked to is the Pioneer A04, a solid reliable burner with a good compatibility record. It will only do the minus format disks but the DVD-Rs play in many players (see the DVD Players list to check). At $260 it is certainly less that the Sony which does the minus and plus formats but the sony is about $300 (after a $50 rebate) so you have to shell out more. You might get the A04 cheaper (see webshopping link on the left) since the A05 was just announced which does 4x burning (A04 does 2x).

The ones to avoid are the first gen (HP100 series and + drives that old) which did not do +r disks (there was a lawsuit after finding out they could not be flashed to work with +RW).

  10. I am a bit confused. Does double sided mean that you have to flip the disc in order to write the other side, or does it support multi layer. Sorry if I asked a stupid question.

Are you saying the + format is better than the - format?

Anyone who says either the +R or -R format is crap... is full of it. Both are fully functional, but some players won't play one or both formats. *Currently* there is better compatibility for -R simply because it has been around longer. Also, -R media is cheaper AFAIK, so that's what I went with and I haven't had any regrets so far.

Kitty: The lawsuit issue with their DVD burners is one of the big reasons I wouldn't buy a HP DVD burner. Those were just some bad business practices... but you have to admit the buyers were a little too trusting that "+R capability will be added soon, for free!".

  14. Baker: No, I don't have an opinion on + vs. -. There is much literature on this on the net. I will be getting a Sony DRU500 so I can do both.

Thorn: I agree - I would not buy a current HP due to lack of customer service and they charge the same for a + drive when you can get a dual drive for the same money. Sony is doing free firmware fixes, something HP should do too.
