  1. when i convert a divx/avi file to mpeg2 and burn it to svcd with either nero or vcdeasy and play it on my pioneer dvd player and a 4:3 tv afterwards, the picture has additional black borders at the top and bottom and seems to be squished. at first i thought this was a problem with my pal tv displaying a ntsc svcd, because something like that was also mentioned in the manual of the player. but then the same happend with a svcd from a pal source file. when i convert my divx to mpeg1 and burn it to vcd2.0 the aspect ratio is just fine and erverything seems to work allright. but i'm not satisfied with the quality of vcds, so i'd rather burn my files to svcd... i'm not quite sure what the problem is now. is there any mistake in my coversion (i followed all guides on this site properly, and as i mentioned, vcd works just fine) or is there a problem with may dvd not handling mpeg2 files properly? anyone knows this problem or got an idea?

How did you convert the file before burning? The best way is to encode it with a template encoder such as those in TMPGEnc. The resultant file then can be burned normally.

  3. well... i used tmpgenc with the proper templates, and as i mentioned above mpeg1 comes out fine on tv while mpeg2 does not. in the preview window while encoding tmpgenc shows the right aspect ratio, but on tv the mpeg2 file has borders an the picture is squished... but i now tried mpeg1 with a much higher bitrate of around 1600 or above combined with some filters like 'sharpen edges', 'soften block noise' and other high quality settings, and the outcome is not perfect but acceptable regarding the picture quality. so, until i find a solution for my mpeg2 problem, apart from manually resizing every movie, which takes quite some time of testing, i'll stick to mpeg1 with high bitrates.

  4. i'm bringing this up again, cause i found quite a simple solution not only for my problem, but i think for most problems that could come up when trying to play svcds on dvd-players that for some or the other reason don't like them very much. the trick is to just encode a standard svcd compliant mpeg2 as you would do anyways and then do the following (taken out of the 'DiVX (AVI) to (S)VCD using DVD2SVCD' giude on this site) :

If your player doesn't play back SVCD without the header trick, like mine. You will have to load up TMPG, click on "File -> MPEG Tools", click on the "Simple Multiplex" tab. Load up your newly created mpg file, change the "Type" to "MPEG-1 Video CD". Click "Run".

now burn that file as a simple vcd2.0 and your player will be fooled, and your getting the quality of an svcd...
