  3. Ok your lookin at a guy that one time owned over 500 Laser discs Now I am down to 125, but to make a backup of your Laser disc to DVD you must have the following for the simple fact, Laser Disc is Analog, not digital like DVD, so there will never be a way to rip or get off the encoding on these discs, so here is what you must do, 1st of all NO I repeat NO laser Disc has any copy Guard, could never make it work so that is taken care of here are your choices.

    1. Buy a DVD Set Top recorder and record your laser discs to a DVD-R,
(this is the solution I like best)
    2. Capture your laser discs with a good MPEG2 cpature card that can do bitrates from 2500 to 8000, mine does all the way to 12000.
Burn your finished capture to a CD-Rom as SVCD or author it to a DVD-R or DVD+R with the DVD Burner in your computer.

Now mind you you can do this but only for backups, you need to still keep your original laser discs.
I have a Panasonic E10 and E20 Set top DVd recorders and Laser Discs come out beautiful on a DVD-R.
I would replace any laser disc with a new DVD if possible, I have done that to a lot of mine, but I have a lot that are still not out on DVD
Aladdin, Lion King, Star Wars Triology, etc.....

  4. thxkid,

I too have more than a few old laserdiscs!

Your post above had me thinking. As I am trying to figure out this capture and burn process for old Videotape, I wonder if the following would work.

I do not have a capture card. However I do have a Canon ZR50 Mini-dv
camcorder that allows analog pass-thru. I have NO IDEA what the bitrate, encoding, etc. is, or even if it is set by the camera or the software using to capture. It comes with Shobiz.

Anyway, would putting the laser through the Canon, and then via Firewire into my Windows XP PC get me what I needed in order to burn a DVD???!!

yes -- but you would still have to encode it from DV to mpeg2 and author it .. but capture in DV is pretty popular - though it is a compressed lossy format.

you can get very good quality ..
