BadVlad posted recently in the DVD player compatibilty section and specifically stated that the Akai DVPS-760 plays SVCDs play perfectly.

However the only way I have been able to play a SVCD on this unit is by utilizing the header trick prior to burning one..

Is there something wrong with my player?

  2. Hi,
I notice something strange with this player. I burn SVCD using VCDEasy (somehow when I burn with Nero, it won't play).

    - for the SVCD mpeg file downloaded from the net, it plays fine.
    - for the SVCD files that I converted using TMPGENc, it won't play. I used CQ (constant quality) option in TMPGENC. I suspect it can only play constant bitrate. I'll re-encode the movie with CBR to see what happen.

One trick I use is to put the SVCD disc that I know it will play in the player first, wait for the movie comes up, stop it, remove the disc, then put the CQ bitrate disc in, then it would play fine.

No, it's not that it has to be constant quality to play..
I burned several xvcds with variable rate and they played fine on my unit, so apparently it doesn't have to be encoded CQ to be able to play it..
.. But no SVCD that I converted using TMPGENc will play unless the header trick is utilized.. I haven't attempted it with VCDEasy yet

  4. end80, I think you misread my post. I have a CQ encoded SVCD but it won't play, I try to re-encoded with CBR. I haven't had any success with Nero when burning SVCD, Nero works fine with VCD and XVCD.

  5. Anyone have any ideas on this? I have found that SVCD's burned with VCDEasy will play fine on the AKAI player, but not when burned with Nero.

And it's not the issue of a MPEG2 directory vs. a MPEGAV directory. I've tried both, along with both styles of ENTRIES.SVD. They always fail on the AKAI player, but work fine on my Apex.

  6. gadget_guy,
I have the same problem. SVCD burned with Nero won't play on AKAI player, don't know what's wrong here.

  7. I used tmpgenc and nero to create a SVCD for the dvps760, and it works perfect...
